STORE CLOSED
Family Game Night closed down our retail store on Jan 31, 2020.
For those of you looking for the short version, we decided to close our store on our terms. But we plan to continue selling online and have plans to team up with other local stores if possible. Until our doors close, come on down and snag a deal. We have great sales going on right now!
Amber and Peter have been running a successful retail store for 10 years now. We started back in 2009 with nothing more than hope and determination, along with a small chunk of cash. Retail looked very different back then and we had ambitious goals. The Great Recession was in full swing and online shopping wasn’t the force it is today.
The truth of the matter, in our opinion, it’s not worth having a brick and mortar store. The times are changing and we are hearing the feedback loud and clear. Stores like ours will continue to close down and we see the trends not changing, unfortunately. Many “customers” today, are focused solely on Price, followed by Unlimited Selection and if you cannot provide these “services” at bargain basement prices, they don’t buy from you. This is not all customers, but it’s clearly the trend. Online shopping has made people so price conscientious, it’s made it near impossible to compete anymore as a brick and mortar store. Too many walk in to browse, get our expert advice, use the bathroom, then go home to order it on Amazon. This happens every single day and is extremely frustrating and defeating.
Running our store is extremely expensive too. We pay thousands of dollars in rent, utilities, staff, payroll, shrinkage and even more with our time and effort as owners. Being open 6 days a week (used to be 7 days), you don’t have any time for a life outside of the store either. Forget birthdays, holidays, even getting away for a weekend. These are impossible dreams as store owners without having a full time staff (which we cannot afford) or closing down the store, which upsets people, costs us money and loses future business.
After 10 years of doing this, we are ready for a change. We are ready for the next chapter in our lives. The goal of any business owner is to make money and ultimately have a better quality of life from it. That is the risk/reward factor when you put it all on the line, all your money, all your time, and it’s either Boom or Bust!
For us, it’s time to make the change before we have to go Bust! Currently, we are doing okay. The store isn’t losing money, nor are we in danger of closing anytime soon. It took 2 years to finally turn a profit in Orlando! Imagine working 80 hours a week for 2 years and make ZERO. Welcome to the life of an entrepreneur. But even if we continue forward, the numbers just don’t justify continuing.
This was no easy decision. There are many factors involved with this decision. But ultimately we felt it’s the best decision. It was decided that we close the retail store. We ran the numbers, looked at our lifestyle, reevaluated goals and determined this was the best course of action to take.
We began marketing the store for sale/lease in 2019. Knowing we still had 2+ years left on our lease. After many months, we finally found a new tenant willing to take over the lease. Unfortunately we were unable to find a buyer for the business. It was preferred to find a new owner to take over than to simply close down the location we’ve been working so hard to grow the past 3 years.
The hardest part of closing down the store is all the wonderful people we’ve met along the way. Watching your lives through the years. Children have been born and shared with us. We even hosted a wedding ceremony in the store and that’s a memory we won’t forget! Many friendships have been made here at Family Game Night. And those relationships are what we cherish the most from this business. And we hope to continue those relationships after the store closes. Businesses come and go, but friendships don’t have too.
With that we say goodbye to Family Game Night as a retail location. But worry not, we will continue to operate as an online only store. We will continue to operate the Facebook groups and website too. We encourage you to keep in contact with us and customers of the store through those channels of communication.
Thank you for the many years of support and friendship!
